GIZ Internship Opportunity: CoM SSAGIZ

The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) supports sub-Saharan cities in tackling the interconnected challenges of climate change and access to sustainable energy. Under CoM SSA, local authorities are invited to make voluntary political commitments to implement climate and energy actions in their community. The initiative supports its signatories through three pillars: (1) the development of Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plans (SEACAP); (2) technical assistance in the development of infrastructure projects; and (3) city-to-city partnerships for knowledge exchange. The programme is implemented by GIZ in cooperation with the French and Spanish development agencies. GIZ is an experienced service provider and assists the German government in achieving its objectives in international cooperation.

Duties and Responsibilities

During the internship, the chosen candidate will gain insights into the daily operations of the CoM SSA team. The position will include the following tasks:

  • Contribute to the overall implementation of the project, working directly with the project managers, external consultants, and the CoM SSA signatory cities. The focus area of the work will be on supporting the development of resilient and sustainable infrastructure projects, climate finance at the local level, and participatory and gender-inclusive climate action planning processes
  • Carry out in-depth research on specific topics such as climate change adaptation, and climate data collection methods, and present results to the team
  • Draft elaborate texts and reports in English and/or French on topics such as climate finance, climate change adaptation, gender-inclusive climate planning
  • Support partners and external consultants with various tasks and ensure smooth coordination with them
  • Support the implementation of a pilot ‘city lab’ focused on solving complex urban adaptation challenges in a CoM SSA city
  • Preparation, implementation and documentation of (online) meetings
  • Prepare presentations and visual content
  • Ad hoc assignments and administrative support to the CoM SSA team

Required Experience

  • Academic degree, at least a Bachelor’s certificate, preferably in the area of development cooperation, political/social sciences, or climate/energy
  • Excellent command of oral and written English and/or French
  • Prior experience in climate and development cooperation fields or demonstration of strong interest, experience with local administrations/cities is an advantage
  • Work experience in developing countries, especially Africa, is a strong asset
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office (in particular Word, Excel, PPT)
  • Strong attention to detail; reliable, creative and self-starting personality
  • Very good time management and flexibility
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
