UNICEF USA’s Internship Program

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:  

UNICEF USA’s Internship Program is a paid internship for the duration of the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. The Internship Program exists for the students’ benefit, in which students will be able to receive quality training and work experience related to their field of interest or major.  


The Internship Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in a college or university degree program. The student may receive college credit for the internship if their college or university permits. Interns work for a period of 8 to 12 weeks in a variety of areas. All interns must be at least 18 years of age and comply with all employment laws. Interns must have authorization to work in the U.S. 

Interns will receive an hourly rate of $17.50, will receive federal-and state-mandated benefits only, and are not eligible for other benefits from UUSA.  

DESCRIPTION

UNICEF USA’s Public Affairs Team seeks a Public Affairs Intern for the Summer 2025 cohort. The intern will report to the Manager of Public Affairs and support the Public Affairs team with projects to engage UNICEF USA advocates and key stakeholders in advancing policy change for children. The intern will have flexibility to work remotely and on days most feasible for his/her/their schedule.  

This internship would provide an opportunity to: 

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of UNICEF and UNICEF USA’s policy priorities and advocacy agenda 
  • Coordinate resources and represent UNICEF USA at coalition working group meetings
  • Mobilize grassroots and grasstops supporters through UNICEF USA advocacy campaigns and events

 
Key Responsibilities/Projects

  • Support Public Affairs Team with the planning and implementation of Congressional meetings 
  • Collaborate with the Public Affairs team on developing advocacy campaigns
  • Develop reports on policy campaign performance and engagement
  • Participate in coalition working group meetings to share and collect intel on opportunities to advance UNICEF and UNICEF USA policy priorities
  • Draft content to highlight UNICEF USA’s advocacy advancements 
  • Assist in tracking policy advancements on key bills and legislation 
  • Attend ad-hoc hearings in-person and/or virtually, and deliver summarized reports to the Public Affairs Team
  • Support ad-hoc UNICEF USA events that engage key UNICEF USA stakeholders, members of Congress and their staff
  • Support development and refresh of policy strategy tools, particularly related to key legislators and state bill tracking

 
Qualifications: 

  • Must be a current student enrolled in a college or University degree program
  • Must have authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Interest in public and/or global policy, international development or human rights, nonprofit management and/or related field preferred
  • The ideal candidate would have experience with community organizing and volunteer mobilization 
  • Strong communication, both oral and written, and project management skills for completing tasks in a timely manner; experience working with across time zones is a plus
  • The successful candidate must also have a demonstrated interest in and knowledge of children’s rights and international issues, as well as a commitment to public service
  • The ideal candidate will be a resourceful and energetic with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work autonomously with attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to lead effective presentations and ease in public speaking for groups large and small
  • Experience working with students, grassroots, and/or grasstops stakeholders is a plus
  • Proven ability to work well with a diverse group of people in a team setting; additional language(s) a plus
  • Must have reliable access to internet to work remotely within the U.S. ONLY for the duration of the internship
  • Fluency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel is preferred
  • Must be a highly motivated team player who enthusiastically embraces the mission of UNICEF and UNICEF USA
  • Must demonstrate UNICEF USA Core Values: Trust, Respect, Accountability, Innovation, Teamwork and Service

It is preferred that interns are located in one of the following geo-hubs for an optimal internship experience: 

  • Washington, D.C.
