Summary

Save the Children’s Government Relations Department works on creating effective policy change and ensuring robust resources to meet the needs of children and achieve the highest program impact. To that end, we develop and advocate for policies that will give millions of children the best chance for success – securing a better future for us all. We cultivate political leadership to drive change and work with policymakers at local, national, and global levels.

The Advisor, Humanitarian Policy, part of the US Humanitarian Policy Team within the Government Relations Department, will advance Save the Children’s humanitarian policy and advocacy agenda within U.S. foreign policy and assistance to protect the rights of children living in humanitarian settings. You will deploy a variety of advocacy tactics, including public campaigns and private briefings.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

  • Develop and implement humanitarian advocacy strategies to advance Save the Children’s objectives in large-scale humanitarian responses and priority thematic issue areas (50%).
  • Conduct policy research, provide real time policy analysis, and develop tailored advocacy and campaign resources for different audiences (20%).
  • Identify, cultivate, and maintain relationships with key U.S. government officials, e.g., Congressional offices and committees, the White House, USAID, the State Department. Coordinate and participate in meetings with key policymakers; manage meeting follow-up communication (15%).
  • Support humanitarian policy and advocacy capacity across the Save the Children global movement through support for offices in different regions, sharing of resources and lessons learned, and participation in global working groups (15%).

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience, plus at least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing a successful advocacy strategy
  • Demonstrated experience drafting and/or analyzing public policy, particularly in relation to humanitarian response, global development, peace and security, and/or human rights
  • Experience establishing and maintaining relationships and networks with strategic policy stakeholders and leveraging coalitions to advance objectives
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic and fast-paced work environment with a learning mindset
  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to juggle multiple work streams with competing deadlines
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and maintaining and environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge or experience in U.S. legislative affairs, policy writing for digital media, and/or U.S. government foreign policymaking process
  • Knowledge or experience of U.S. foreign policy on West and Central Africa, including the Central Sahel, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Nigeria, related to addressing humanitarian crises driven by conflict, forced displacement, and climate related disasters
  • Knowledge or experience in any of the following at a policy level: humanitarian access, humanitarian financing, gender-based violence in emergencies, gender in emergencies, anticipatory action, humanitarian/peace/development nexus, protection of civilians/civilian harm mitigation, locally-led humanitarian action
  • Understanding of humanitarian principles and international humanitarian law
  • Professional working proficiency in French

Compensation

Save the Children is offering the following salary ranges for this position, dependent on candidate location:

  • Geo 1 – NY Metro, DC, and other locations with labor costs significantly above national average: Target Salary for this position is $84,150 – $94,050 base salary
  • Geo 2 – Locations around the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $76,500 – $85,500 base salary
  • Geo 3 – Locations significantly below the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $68,850 – $76,950 base salary

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, base salary of internal peers, business sector, and geographic location (more information on job structure is available here). Employee may be eligible for an incentive program. Save the Children also offers paid vacation, accrued at least 12 days a year, depending on paygrade and length of service, paid safety and wellness leave of at least 1 day per month worked for a full time employee which is pro rata reduced for employees working less than a full time schedule, and at least 10 paid holidays a year. Employees may be eligible for additional bonus compensation.
