Fully-Funded PhD Studentships in the School of Politics and International Relations

Would you like to write a PhD thesis in the School of Politics and International Relations and receive government sponsorship covering fees and living expenses?

The competition for PhD studentships funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is now open!

View the application form and lots of supporting information. You can access more advice about applying specifically for a studentship in the School of Politics and International Relations on the Midlands Graduate School webpages. Please note that applicants must send a CV, a one-page note on your preparation and motivation to conduct research to PhD level on a topic in Politics and International Relations using social science methods, and a one-page outline of your proposed research topic to benjamin.holland@nottingham.ac.uk by Monday 16 December. The School will shortlist the most promising candidates and provide advice to help ensure that they can submit a really strong case for support by the deadline of 21 January.

The most pertinent eligibility details are:

  • You may apply with or without having a master’s degree
  • The competition is open to Home and International students (but two-thirds of the studentships will be reserved for Home students)
  • Applicants must have (or be on course to have) at least a 2:1 at UG level (but one of the criteria on which applications will be judged is academic achievement, and candidates with a first-class degree are automatically scored more highly than those with a 2:1)
  • The project must fall within the ESRC’s scientific remit; we will give you notice of the opportunity to apply for a PhD funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council in due course
